 Social Security Payment:

Paper checks ending soon, what social security recipients need to know
Business & Finance

Millions of Americans are getting ready to receive their Social Security payments for June 2025. These monthly payments are sent out to retirees, people with disabilities, and survivors who qualify. The payments are not sent all at once but are instead delivered in several waves throughout the month. If you’re expecting a payment, it’s important to know exactly when it will arrive based on your situation.

The payment date for Social Security payments depends on a few key factors. These include your birth date, how long you’ve been receiving benefits, and whether you also get Supplemental Security Income (SSI). People who have been receiving benefits since before May 1997 get their payments earlier than others. If you're unsure about your date, don’t worry—we’ll explain the schedule below.

For June 2025, the payment schedule is divided into four main groups. Those who started getting benefits before May 1997 will receive their check on June 3. If your birthday is between the 1st and 10th of any month, your Social Security payment will arrive on June 11. Those born between the 11th and 20th will get theirs on June 18, and those born from the 21st to 31st will receive payments on June 25.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) usually sends payments on Wednesdays. The second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of the month are when most checks go out. The week you receive your payment depends on your birthdate. This system helps spread out the payments over the month, making it easier to manage resources and avoid delays.

If you get Social Security payments and also receive SSI, or if you've been on Social Security since before May 1997, your payment date is different. In this case, Social Security arrives on the 3rd of each month and SSI on the 1st. However, if these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, payments are made a bit earlier. For example, if June 3 falls on a Sunday, your payment might be sent out on June 1.

There’s another big change coming soon: paper checks are ending. Starting September 30, 2025, Social Security payments will no longer be mailed as paper checks. Instead, payments will be made digitally—through direct deposit, debit cards, or digital wallets. While this may be a big shift for some seniors, it’s meant to make the system faster, cheaper, and more secure. However, some people may still be allowed to receive checks if they qualify for an exemption.

Business & finance

There’s growing public concern about how Social Security payments are managed. Some people believe that benefits are too low for hardworking Americans, while others are upset about government aid given to non-citizens. Many are calling for major reforms to make the system fairer and more supportive—especially for people who raised families or worked lower-wage jobs their whole lives.

Sometimes, Social Security payments don’t arrive on time. If your check doesn’t come when expected, the SSA advises waiting three extra mailing days. After that, you can call their toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. It’s best to call in the morning or later in the week when wait times are usually shorter. You can also find help at a local Social Security office using the SSA’s online office locator.
